Bathroom Redo

While I was away in Alaska for a wedding and vacation, the boyfriend tackled a full bathroom remodel in just one week. The fact that I had no idea any of this was happening was a sore point (to say the least) as it has become rather a bad habit of his to tackle renovations in secret while I'm away. But it was badly needed it and I wasn't sorry to miss all the mess, destruction and 99% of the work that went into it.

I've been planning to use most of these materials forever: subway tile in the shower, 1-inch white hex tiles on the floor and beadboard on the walls. All the essentials are new now, including the tub, sink and toilet.

I do love how it's turned out. After 10 years of dreaming about this it's still hard to believe it's real!

This floor is probably my favorite.

The shower wall tile goes all the way to the ceiling now, which I love.

He even built the medicine cabinet based on photos I saw online since nothing available would fit our oddly shaped opening.

  1. Wow! It looks FANTASTIC, and very much like what I want to do with my bathroom. I can't believe he did it all in a week! I'm not sure how I'd feel about someone surprising me with a bathroom remodel. On the one hand it's wonderful to not have to deal with it all, but I fear it might bring up "control issues" for me.

Anyhow, I LOVE the hex tile on the floor - might have to consider that. And the beadboard looks great! Is it just painted wooden wainscoating, or is it the kind that's more water resistant?

    1. Thanks Cat, we both love how it turned out. It's definitely classic and fitting for a 1940s house methinks. The hex tile floor with grey grout is probably my favorite.

I hear ya on the control issues. The boyfriend would say that's my entire issue with secret renos, but I also really like picking things out. And by things I mean everything. Luckily, most of the finishes were in the reno plans for years (the tile and beadboard) and I got home at a point where I was able to still change a few things (the granite bottom of the shower niche, the accessories and the trim). I hadn't picked out a particular tub, sink or toilet but I'm cool with his choices there, except the sink isn't my favorite. I wish it had more of a rim to set things on, but we needed something so narrow depth-wise that options were extremely limited.

The beadboard is beadboard paneling that he sprayed with waterborne lacquer. We previously had it and it held up well, even in a rather moist environment, but was only 2/3 the height it is now. The boy also replaced the bathroom fan and its vent piping so it noticeably less humid after showers. Yay!

  2. I wouldn't mind if my husband was to renovate behind my back... or even hammered a nail ;)

  3. Gorgeous! It looks very classy and I love the storage up above the toilet. I like the idea of a secret reno because then I wouldn't have to live through the upheaval part - but I really enjoy picking things out so that would be a bummer.
