Medicine Cabinet Makeover

Once upon a time my medicine cabinet looked liked this. It's a small cabinet inside an even smaller bathroom that lacks storage. Still, it usually wasn't too cluttered, as you can see, but what you can't see unless you click on the picture and view it in a larger size, is that the white finish/veneer on this cheapie cabinet was worn and discolored. It was actually starting to creep me out.

I wasn't sure how well a coat of paint would hold up to the moisture of toothbrushes and whatnot, so I decided to cover it with contact paper instead.

I found this paper at Big Lots and thought it looked cheerful. Putting it up was easier than I thought, and I'm terrible at cutting or hanging things in a straight line.

It looked pretty good even when filled, but it wasn't perfect. Things would fall out frequently and you had to move some things to get to others. Still, I didn't give it much thought until we happened to see a medicine cabinet organizer while shopping this weekend. I didn't buy it when I first saw it. I hated the thought of spending $8 on a big hunk of plastic. But I thought about it all night and the more I thought about it and searched for other options online the more I thought this one was perfect for our needs. So I went and bought it this afternoon.

Now not only is more stuff than ever officially stored in there, but things are easier to get to than ever. And it makes me happy just to look inside the cabinet now. I just love organized spaces!

What's the last thing you organized?

  1. Eee Gads! I'd hate to show you what my medicine cabinet looks like! Suffice it to say, it's a tad bit more cluttered than yours. I am very impressed by your bathroom minimalism!

  2. Funny, I reorganized my medicine cabinet recently, but I just repurposed jars and random containers. Your re-org is so much nicer!

  3. My mom sent me to college with a contractor's tool box for (read: filled with) medications. I'm finally getting close to having a medicine cabinet that looks like yours and it's such a relief. Nicely done!

  4. Thanks, ladies! Although, to be fair, it's not like this is *all* of our toiletries, etc. Our medicine is kept in the kitchen. We also have two over-the-toilet cabinets. Some of my supplies are kept in my bedroom because I get ready there. We have one bathroom and competing schedules. This is really just the stuff we need to use daily at the sink.

  5. Hadn't even realized that this is a job that should be on my Wm. Morris list until I saw your post!

  6. Isn't is amazing what a little pretty and a little organizing can do? I'd say that was a great $8!

  7. That looks fantastic Candi! Inspiration for my next home. The last thing I organized was under the bathroom sinks and I need to do it again, so I obviously didn't get it right the first time. : ) And I need to organize Squirrel's socket sets. That's a whole afternoon, but I've been using them to refurbish an old power washer. Ha ha ha...it sounds funny even saying that since I'm not known for my mechanical prowess, but you've got to start somewhere right?

    1. Thanks Christine. I never get organizing right the first time! And tools are the one thing my boyfriend *will* organize. Seriously, he has tool organizers and labeled drawers, the whole works. It does make it easy to find things....when he puts them back that is.

  8. I'm not too sure about that one Candi.
For me a storage box inside a storage is always a bit redundant, it looked well organized enough before.
And we all know what happens to transparent plastic after a while, not the easiest to keep pristine.

    1. Well to each their own, of course, but I love it. Before it was easy to knock things over which caused a chain reaction and usually ended up with half the contents in the sink. I used to have glass containers in there, but they were all broken for this reason. Since buying the organizer getting items is easier and nothing falls out. I've had the clear plastic glass (with designs on it) for years and it still looks fine.
