This was a great post with equally great discussion. I'm a pretty smart cookie but even I won't give blanket Financial advice regardless of how deeply I believe it simply because different people in different stages of their life need different investment strategies. I am smart enough to know that. I was pretty appalled that a podcast I listen to on debt and money where Financial advice was handed out. As someone said minimalism is different for each of us I think and it's our job to find out what that is not blindly follow like sheep what's someone else's idea of it is. And sorry nothing tickled me more than the comment about a couple of 30-something guys being hucksters who gave up six-figure corporate jobs brag about getting themselves out of debt and then Hawk there documentary their ebooks there coffee shop and everything else they have their hands and financially. If you really want to impress me do your podcast and do all that without hugging anything let's see where you are. They expect when they (the minimalists) stop buying internet for their home that their friends are going to allow them to bring their laptops over to their houses and use the internet that the friends have to pay for. Either that, or they go to a coffee shop in which they sit for hours and have to drink expensive coffee to use the internet that's provided to customers. Internet's like $40 a month people...WTF? <br /><br />I'd rather be anti social than have any mooching-ass friends like this in my life. They're the same type of people who only smoke at bars when their friends (or strangers) are willing to bum them free cigarettes, then go on rants about how their not actually smokers because they never actually buy packs of cigarettes. themselves. <br />Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144616579963110201.post-63743527653462693242015-06-11T15:57:39.012-07:002015-06-11T15:57:39.012-07:00Narcissism is never a good time for anybody, inclu...Narcissism is never a good time for anybody, including (ultimately) the narcissist. Yep I called their post simplistic and smug. And what was their post. They declared that life was too short to do anything you don't like. Well maybe that is true for some who chose to leave their job and make money convincing others to follow their mantra, but for lots of us, especially those of us who are parents or are taking care of anyone besides oneself, life is just filled with doing stuff you don't like. But apparently my pointing that out was "ruining it for the rest of them". I guess they all want to believe that it is just fine living a selfish narcissistic life. Sorry about my rant, I was just so thrilled to find out I was not alone in finding them tiresome and smug! She deleted most of her annoying old posts ('cause you know, holding onto a bunch of old posts is so not minimalistic), but there's still an "ode to the macbook" I find hilarious and kind of embarrassing.<br />I love this post, you should rant more often (I think that's the point of a blog, unless you're selling an ebook, of course). This stupid notion that everybody should be making a living writing ebooks is what irks me the most. Seriously? How would the world function then? Some people actually like their jobs, and unlike what these people seem to believe, not everybody is a borderline hoarder drowning in debt. I am saddened and horrified by a handful of minimalists who CHOOSE to leave their well-paying jobs and generous lifestyle habits behind to pursue a more simplistic way of being. I believe one has privilege, or unearned advantage associated with race, class, gender, education, etc., if you have the ability, the choice, in this case to more or less leave one lifestyle behind to pursue another. Moreover, privilege means you more than likely have the choice to resume your previous lifestyle if you so choose. At the very least, you still own the privilege you have come to benefit from at this point in life. To the white people-former six-figured corporate superstars-I am cool and forward thinking because I am giving up the majority of my belongings to preach to everyone, get a clue!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11948456720148596151noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144616579963110201.post-3561323354075784832012-11-10T09:34:48.184-08:002012-11-10T09:34:48.184-08:00Far from it...I literally have been laughing out l...Far from it...I literally have been laughing out loud reading. : )Very few blogs can make me do that. :)Heatherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00384587118391823497noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144616579963110201.post-27025154475027554752012-11-08T10:14:50.812-08:002012-11-08T10:14:50.812-08:00Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comm...Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment Heather. I want some lessons I can ponder, humor and a little scratch behind the ear. ; ) I feel like some of the more extreme blogs speak to a very small group of elite people who sit around all day counting there items and feeling superior. I don't relate. I have a cat who sheds, a dog who eats my flip flops( and yes, I have more than one pair) and I like to have furniture to sit on, with options for different parts of a medium size house that lets me sit far enough away from the said dog once he eats the flip flops (he gets gassy). Point is, I like to live, I have to work and I dont like feeling degraded. Thanks. I think what some of you are missing, though, is what's really going on with people like Bogue and the Minimalist guys, and that is they are playing the oldest game in the world. They're nothing but hucksters. I mean, think about it. The whole approach is "Your life sucks, mine is better, stick with me and I'll let you in on the secrets I've discovered." Then they string you along, sucking money out of you until the notice the Paypal account is not filling up like it used to, they've run the string, and they pull the plug and move on. They're con men, nothing more. Oh...and I do have to add that I AM enjoying the fact that Bogue and his girlfriend are flat broke and begging for money. That's the icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07427372542224699094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144616579963110201.post-22090384611567011072012-09-24T13:53:22.660-07:002012-09-24T13:53:22.660-07:00Only found you blog today (via The Minimalist Woma...Only found you blog today (via The Minimalist Woman) and have to say "Ha, Ha!
